*the following information is based on a two (2) person weekly stay in Cancun’s hotel/beach zone
1) Stay in a private condominium resort w/kitchenette at Endless Summer Mexico's Cancun Plaza! Direct on the beach!
Save you money by re-directing your vacation budget from the traditional all-inclusive hotel-vacation to the best-valued vacation possible. When you buy all-inclusive vacations you lose options, spending power, and TIME!
All-inclusive hotel’s make it seem like you are getting a good deal, but really you are wasting your time and money and eating a lot of massed produced hotel food that does not represent the freshness of the local cuisine. It makes tourists not want to spend extra money and explore the Cancun restaurant culture.
It keeps tourists at the hotel and it keeps them coming back to the hotel...
…and that’s where they want you to be so they can sell you overpriced items such as jewelry, clothes, necessities, adventure tours and timeshare sales.
Experience the Mexican culture as a local but enjoy your vacation as a tourist.
Pay the price locals pay and enjoy the culture the locals enjoy.
Hotels cannot offer this kind of enjoyment.
Rent your own apartment-condominium and enjoy the benefits of having the amenities and comfort of your home. The private condominium-complexes in the hotel zone are similar to the hotels and are located directly beside the hotels and other condo properties on the exact same beach.
With the mix of residents and tourists, you get the peace of mind that the locals have and also the excitement of meeting other tourists as well as locals on the property and on the beach.
Have fresh Yucatan peninsula vegetables and local exotic fruits from the comfort of your room rather than ''buffet-fruit''.
Wake up in the morning and have a healthy breakfast to the sunrise in your own private kitchen rather than hiding from the morning sun in a restaurant with hundreds of people competing for position.
Not only does this save money,
It saves your most important asset while on vacation…
TIME!
Coming, going, waiting, and sitting all take time and energy away from your vacation. Time that you could be (and will be) spending on better stuff like high quality adventure, rest, and relaxation.
Do you have to cook every meal for yourself?
-Not at all.
There is a full service restaurant inside the complex, and 3 restaurants across the street on the lagoon (sunset views) as well as 2 other full sized convenience stores. There are also multiple restaurant delivery options that we partner with to bring you great local food and great value. We encourage you to eat healthy on your vacation so you can go home feeling and looking amazing!
Eat an easy and healthy breakfast (fruit/cereal/yogurt/nuts/eggs/shakes), learn some new recipes and flavors for lunch, and go out for dinner.
Or, do whatever you feel like doing.
The difference is in your spending power and value,
Now you control the power of spending instead of the hotels. You will always give yourself a better deal than the hotels will and so will we.
2. Buy fresh groceries from the local super market
The benefits of having fresh local fruit and vegetables in your room throughout your vacation are AMAZING…
Wake up in the morning to a fresh Yucatan papaya liquado (fruit mixed with water shake) and have a mango salad with fresh Caribbean seafood ceviche for lunch.
Eat healthy and fresh during the day at your convenience and save 1-2 hours from your day. Spend this time on the beach instead of waiting in a restaurant and feel good about saving money and eating healthy.
The produce and seafood in Mexico tastes amazing compared to other countries that do not have warm climates.
Go home looking and feeling healthy rather than looking and feeling bloated or fat.
When you stay at a hotel, you do not have the option to store food in your room. Whenever you get hungry you have to sacrifice about an hour out of your day, just because the hotels need to make money at your expense and in turn, waste your valuable vacation time.
3. Cook your own meals 1-2 times a day
It saves time and money. In order to maximize your vacation time, do some of your own cooking. Everything tastes better in Mexico so if you are not a great cook -don’t worry, it will probably taste good anyways.
When you are on vacation you should be able to cook and eat breakfast in your underwear in the comfort of your own home. Stock your fridge with the basics -milk, eggs, fruit, vegetables, water, bread, cereal, condiments…and go from there.
It will save you $50-$150 dollars a day!
Eat healthy when you are in Cancun, go home with a sun-tan and new found health.
Stay for an extra week or two and pay for it with the extended vacation budget that is available to you through private vacation rentals and booking your vacation with Cancun Connection.
4. Go to the liquor store to buy alcohol for your condo
All-inclusive hotels, restaurants and bars typically serve low quality alcohol and hope that you don’t notice. That contributes to an unhealthy night or day out and a horrible hangover. Also, if you are purchasing alcohol from a restaurant or bar, it may be overpriced.
Why? -Because they try to sell the cheap stuff and make more money.
They assume that nobody knows or cares what’s in their drink.
They are WRONG –because we do.
Why? -Because we are consciously aware of what we put into our bodies, especially when we are on vacation in a foreign country. Here are some pointers on how to keep your alcohol consumption clean and good health;
Go to the liquor store and buy your own high quality alcohol for your room at a discount
Take advantage of the automatic drink blender in your room
Do not run out of ice, big bags of ice available at store, use cooler/freezer/sink
When in bars and nightclubs, order bottled drinks and brand-name only
Pre-drink before you go out for the night
Provide your own drinks on the beach w/cooler
Pre-buy In-room alcohol (tequila-beer-brand name)
5) Go out for dinner at Franz approved restaurant
Where you eat is one of the most important areas of your vacation. It is crucial that you get great value everywhere you go. In order to do this you need to be informed about the local food and beverage industry.
Eat healthy and eat where the locals eat. Cancun has many hidden gems all over the city that are hard to find and have amazing new flavors.
For the most part, all the restaurants in the Hotel zone are going to be decent, but will have an expensive price tag for what you get. If you go to a Cancun Connection approved restaurant in downtown Cancun, you will receive amazing value for your money that you cannot find inside the hotel zone.
There are many great valued restaurants in the hotel zone that we approve, just remember...everything costs more in the hotel zone, and, everything is geared towards making profits from tourists.
When you are spending money in an establishment that caters to the locals, you will always receive a better value for the price paid.
This is one of the keys to saving money on your vacation…getting great value at amazing restaurants!
Cancun has amazing restaurants with great service. Authentic Yucatan foods as well as regional foods from all over Mexico can be found in Cancun. But you have to go to where it’s good.
6) Go to a Franz approved nightclub/bar
Order drinks by brand and ask the price before you order
Always ask how much the bottle of wine is before you order it
Ask the bartender to make your drink and ask them to pour you a bigger portion
Avoid paying for all-you-can drink rates and products (bad for your health)
Take advantage of free Margaritas! Avoid free shots of alcohol (unless it’s pure tequila)
Do not let employees of bars pour cheap liquor in your mouth (free or paid)
7) Buy your adventure tours through approved tour agents
The adventure tour industry in Cancun and Riviera Maya is a vast frenzy of extreme excitement, adventure, lost and new found lands. This is where the Mayans built the pyramids. It is the home of the ancient Mayan jungle and the Pirates of the Caribbean.
The adventure is endless and waiting for you…
Jump 50 feet into a natural water pool in the middle of the jungle (Cenote/Ceh-Noh-Tay),
Zip-line across the jungle-tree tops, drive an All-Terrain vehicle through ancient Mayan trails.
Meet the Mayans.
Snorkel at national ecological reefs and Cancun’s famous underwater museum. See Sting-rays, parrot fish, lobsters, schools of fish, sea-turtles, and discover much, much, more in the blue Caribbean underwater world.
Drive a Ferrari, swim with the dolphins, surf a kite-board, fly a fly-board.
The choices of adventure tours are endless, and awesome but don’t buy from the wrong person or you will be paying more, sometimes a lot more. Street vendors will try to sell you tours that are most likely overpriced. If the tours are underpriced, they require that you go and see a timeshare presentation. You do not want to do that.
Tourists that are not informed frequently get taken advantage of when buying tours.
The hotel and street vendors have to pay for overhead costs that we do not have. This is why we can sell tours for cheaper than the competition.
8) Negotiate prices in Spanish with locals (learn money values)
It is easy to learn the numbers and monetary system. It is also necessary in order to save money and not get ripped-off.
Learn the numbers one (1) to ten (10)
Google or Youtube it and learn it. It will take you ten (10) minutes. Furthermore, if you want to save some real accumulated cash…you need to learn some basic phrases and questions in Spanish. For example, donde esta el baño? (-where is the bathroom?) or cerveca por favor! (-beer please!)
Buy a Spanish phrase book and read it at home for a month before you come. It can save you hundreds of dollars. The price that you pay here for many tourist items depends on your negotiating skills.
If you can use a little bit of Spanish when you are negotiating, you will get a better price every time…
The Mexicans love it when foreigners try to speak Spanish. They think it’s fun and entertaining and are always willing to help you learn.
In this process, a relationship occurs where you bond between the two cultures and the vendors are more willing to give you a better price if you speak Spanish.
For example, if you are a tourist buying sunglasses from a vendor on the beach, you will have to pay $200+ pesos MXN, but if you are a local you can get them for $100 pesos MXN.
Talk to the person that is selling you something. Ask them where they are from…?
Tell them where you are from and that you are enjoying your Mexican vacation. Try to speak a little bit of Spanish (all vendors in the hotel zone will most likely speak clear English). All you need to do is ask them how they are doing in Spanish (-como estas?) and when they ask how you are (-y usted?), respond –Bien!
Then you can speak English for the rest of the time and you will automatically win favor with the vendor towards the purchase.
9) How to take the bus & how to take not get ripped off by taxis.
Taking the bus is easy and you get to see an elevated view of the Nichupte Lagoon, something you cannot see from a taxi or car.
The bus is very inexpensive (about.80 cents USD). Taxis are relatively more expensive in the hotel zone ($200-400 pesos MXN) and extremely less expensive downtown (40-70 pesos MXN-2-3 dollars USD).
The hotel zone is just one long street that you go back and forth on. One side is the beach and the other side is the lagoon.
The bus is always driving by in the hotel zone ready to pick up anyone that is standing at a bus stop or even just on the side of the rode.
Ride a bus downtown for less than a dollar USD, and then take a taxi anywhere downtown for less than 4 dollars USD.
The taxi drivers in Cancun are good people and family people. Look for the cross hanging from the rear view mirror. Some of the downtown taxi drivers speak English and all of the hotel zone drivers speak English. The taxi drivers are very nice and enjoy talking for the ride.
Ask them where they are from and you will find that most taxi drivers are from all over Mexico. They always have a cultural heritage story for you..real culture from real people.
When you are coming back from downtown to the hotel zone, it only cost 12 pesos (.65 cents USD) but to take a taxi it will cost a minimum of $300 pesos MXN. Remember, everything costs more in the hotel zone and that includes taxi´s, food, alcohol, and purchase items.
All you have to do is take a taxi from wherever you are downtown to the entrance of the Hotel zone for $25 pesos, and then take the bus back to your hotel. Take the bus for a 15-20 minute ride instead of a taxi and you will save $300-600 pesos ($25-$50 USD) every time you go downtown and return to the hotel zone. Also, Uber is cheaper.
10) Buy your plane ticket when prices are cheap
Buy your plane tickets when there is a deal going on. In order to do this, you need to be watching for the deals when they come up. Opt-in to some flight advertisements and get emails sent to you about ticket specials. Check them at least once (1) a week for an ongoing basis.
Ticket prices can drop and rise drastically on a daily basis and you have to be there waiting for it six (6) months to a year in advance, or be watching and ready to buy at the last minute and/or immediately.
Also, you can fly stand-by if you have a flexible and /or long term schedule.
11) Bring the necessities from home
If you buy beachwear from a store in the middle of winter and it is snowing outside, you can probably get it for a lot cheaper than if it was summer, or in a hot-weathered tourist destination like Cancun.
Take advantage of your geographical location and seasonal climate and buy your vacation clothes at local outlets in your home city or town. Chances are…you will find something you like for a great price that you can wear in Cancun. Beach clothes in the hotel zone are priced high for tourists and have regional shapes and sizes. Don’t waste precious vacation time. Bring stuff from home.
If you come on vacation with everything you need already, you will save time and money,
When you have to buy a necessity while you’re on vacation like sunglasses or sandals, they will almost always cost more to buy them in any tourist zone. Furthermore, you will spend countless hours shopping for things that you could have brought from home.
Here are some suggestions of things to bring from home:
Bathing suit(s), sandals (flip-flops),sunglasses, towels
Bars of soap (anti-bacterial), Shampoo (in mini-bottles), sunscreen
Music speakers for Ipod or computer
Beach hat(s), beach shirts, diving mask/snorkel, aqua shoes, running shoes
Fishing rod (free fishing), roller blades, surf board
These are all things that will make your vacation run smoother. Your best value is where you save money and create time to spend on awesome vacation stuff rather than boring and redundant vacation items that will waste your time and money.
12) Take a shuttle-van from the airport instead of a taxi $50 (2 persons)
Taxi’s cost $400 pesos MXN per person in your group. If you are only one (1) person it will cost you $600 pesos MXN ($50 USD). Take a white shuttle-van instead. It should only cost $150 pesos MXN.
13) Never order an item off the menu without asking what the price is first
Sometimes the waiters are sneaky and will take advantage of you if you are not paying attention.
Order menu items from the menu only, and you will not have this problem. Stick to the basics and don’t make your order complicating. This way you won’t get let down if your order gets mixed up because of a misunderstanding with your waiter (common occurrence w/language barriers).
Here’s how the trick works, the waiter will suggest something for you that is not on the menu and is very attractive and then overcharge you for the food item which will be relatively higher than average menu items. Don’t get fooled with this trick, it can cost you an extra $20-40 a plate.
14) Always ask for your change and the bill
Make sure you ask for your change when at a bar or restaurant. Sometimes the change will never come, so it helps if they know that you are waiting for it. Just say cambio, it means change.
